Le château et la citadelle de Saumur. Architectures du pouvoir.

Quel que soit le point d’où le visiteur découvre le château de Saumur, le monument édifié au sommet du coteau, dans l’écrin de la citadelle protestante, avec la ville et le fleuve royal à ses pieds, crée aujourd’hui encore une très forte impression. Figuré dans toute sa splendeur sur l’enluminure des Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, Saumur compte parmi ces sites emblématiques qui façonnent les représentations que tout un chacun se fait du château médiéval. L’ouvrage collectif présenté ici est le résultat d’une convergence de recherches et d’une fructueuse collaboration inter-disciplinaire qui ont permis de renouveler en profondeur l’histoire de la construction du château et de la citadelle de Saumur. La mise en évidence des vestiges de l’abbaye des Xe-XIe siècles, la découverte des restes d’une grande tour maîtresse romane, l’édification d’une forteresse philippienne constituent des jalons maintenant mieux cernés. La construction du palais ducal, grand témoin de l’architecture somptuaire des princes des fleurs de lis, illustre la parfaite symbiose unissant vers 1400 l’expression du pouvoir au goût des arts. Deux siècles plus tard, le gouverneur protestant Duplessis-Mornay imprima durablement sa marque en engageant l’impressionnant chantier de la citadelle puis en faisant aménager des appartements de prestige à l’intérieur du château médiéval. Les affectations successives, pénitentiaires, militaires altérèrent progressivement la physionomie du monument mais en assurèrent également la conservation. La publication éclaire d’un jour nouveau l’histoire longue d’une restauration ponctuée de belles découvertes mais également de soubresauts, parmi lesquels l’effondrement du front nord de la citadelle survenu en 2001. La Société Française d’Archéologie est heureuse aujourd’hui de proposer la publication de cet ouvrage composé de synthèses inédites richement documentées et illustrées, rédigées par une dizaine de spécialistes. Textes d’Éric Cron, Claire Giraud-Labalte, Jean-Yves Hunot, Christine Leduc-Gueye, Emmanuel Litoux, Gabor Mester de Parajd, Jacqueline Mongellaz, Daniel Prigent et Mary Whiteley.

The Château and Citadel at Saumur. Architectural constructions of power

Regardless the viewpoint from which the visitor discovers the Château de Saumur, which is built on the crest of a hill and encased in a Protestant citadel, with the city and the royal river at its feet, the monument creates a very strong impression even today. Portrayed in all its splendour in the Très Riches Heures of the Duke of Berry, Saumur is among the sites that embody the medieval castle in popular imagination. The articles collected here are the result of converging research and fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration that have led to an in-depth renewal of the building history of the château and citadel of Saumur. The exposure of the vestiges of the tenth-to-eleventh-century abbey, the discovery of the remains of a large Romanesque master tower, and the building of a fortress by Philippe Auguste are points in its history that are now better defined. The construction of the ducal palace, most important witness to the sumptuary architecture of the princes of the fleur-de-lis, illustrates the perfect symbiosis that existed between artistic taste and the expression of power around 1400. Two centuries later, the Protestant governor, Duplessis-Mornay, left an indelible mark by undertaking the building of the citadel and then reworking the interior of the medieval castle to accommodate grand residential apartments. The use of the castle as a prison and military barracks progressively altered the physiognomy of the monument but also assured its preservation. This publication sheds new light on the history of a lengthy restoration punctuated by important discoveries as well as setbacks, among which was the collapse of the north front of the citadel in 2001. Architekturen der Macht Von welcher Seite der Besucher sich der Burg von Saumur auch nähert, er ist auch heute noch stark beeindruckt von der einen Hügel bekrönenden Anlage, eingebettet in die der protestantische Zitadelle, zu deren Füßen sich die Stadt und der königliche Fluss ausbreiten. Saumur ist schon in der Buchmalerei in den Très Riches Heures des Herzogs von Berry dargestellt und gilt seither als einer jener emblematischen Orte, die das Bild der mittelalterlichen Burg schlechthin geprägt haben. Das vorliegende, von mehreren Autoren verfasste Werk ist aus der Konvergenz mehrerer Forschungsarbeiten und einer ergiebigen fachübergreifenden Zusammenarbeit entstanden, die eine tiefgreifende Neubewertung der Baugeschichte von Burg und Zitadelle ermöglicht haben, deren Etappen durch das Sichtbarmachen der Ruinen der Abtei aus dem 10. und 11. Jh., die Entdeckung eines großen romanischen Bergfrieds und die Errichtung der philippinischen Festung nunmehr deutlich geworden sind. Der Bau des herzoglichen Palastes, Paradebeispiel für die Prachtarchitektur der Herrscher mit dem Lilienwappen veranschaulicht die einzigartige Symbiose, die um 1400 die Darstellung der Macht mit dem Kunstverständnis eingegangen ist. Zwei Jahrhunderte später hat der protestantische Gouverneur Duplessis-Mornay mit dem imposanten Bau der Zitadelle und dem Einbau von Prunkgemächern in die mittelalterliche Burg seinen bleibenden Stempel aufgedrückt. Die spätere Nutzung als Gefängnis, dann als Kaserne veränderten nach und nach das Aussehen der Anlage, sicherten aber auch ihren Erhalt. Die Veröffentlichung rückt die lange Restaurierungsgeschichte neu ins Licht, in deren Verlauf interessante Entdeckungen gemacht wurden, aber auch Unglücksfälle vorkamen, zum Beispiel, als 2001 die Nordseite der Zitadelle einstürzte. Die Société Française d’Archéologie freut sich, diesen von neun Koautoren verfassten Sammelband vorlegen zu können, der neue Synthesen, ein reiches Quellenmaterial und zahlreiche Bilder enthält.
